Fragmented Figure Animation

Project Overview

ART 222: Introduction to Painting Container/Contained | Madison, WI, Junior Student January 2025 – May 2025

Acrylic and oil Paint, 8” x 12” to 16” x 24” canvases, 2025

For this project I chose to create a fragmented figure of my father. I took reference images of a close up on his face and of his hands. The whole project as a sort of gift to him to showcase his hard-work and detication through the physical bruises and scratches on his face and hands.

The main painting is of his face while the other two paintings are of his hands. The main painting being the central subject has one of his eyes closed as to show both an active and resting face. The hands display two different poses, one that represents a more relaxed pose while the other represents a pained pose.

Personal Notes

For the style of the painting I took inpiration from Cubism paintings with breaking down the figure into simple shapes and colors. I took that approach by breaking down the figure's face by segmenting certain pieces with lighter and darker hues of different shapes and colors.

I really loved how the final painting turned out! I was really surprised to see how the segmented approach made the painting really pop.
