Project Overview
ART429: Digital Imaging Studio: PhotoNovel | Madison, WI, Sophomore Student September 2024 – December 2024
What: In this animation I wanted to create a fun and spooky story about an unnamed protagonist exploring an abandoned mansion with little resources and knowledge of the place. It's largely inspired by a bunch of horror media that I grew up with like the Scooby doo cartoons or the Resident Evil games and the Luigi's mansion games. It's a mix of styles between digital illustrations and real life photos to create this juxtaposition between the main character and their environment, creating this feeling of mystery. It's a very ambient piece with very little music accompanying the action, this was an intentional decision to have the viewers be immersed in the world by listening to these sounds. Music is used, but only to evoke a sense of dread and mystery.
Why: Aside from it being October, the reason I wanted to create an animation based on horror is because it's a genre that really invests the viewer into the world and characters they are following. It puts the viewer in a place where the only real "horror" they are facing is in the screen in front of them rather than outside, which forms this form of escapism that I really love. It's also a fun genre to appeal towards since there is a bunch of different methods of tackling horror in media, so trying to mix something that felt ambient and goofy was a fun challenge to attempt. There isn't any deep message that I wanted try to portray, I just wanted to create something fun for myself and others to see. It was a really fun project despite some struggles, so I hope people can get get a good laugh or scare with my animation!
